Timothy Rice

Devolution

It’s great to live free of the other sheep until you hear the wolves howl.

Rating: 2.5/5 – A great premise squandered with confusing choices.

My biggest impression of Devolution was that this is a book that didn’t really know what it wanted to be. It probes some interesting ideas, but refuses to commit to any of them. Is it horror? If so, why am I glad so many of the characters are being eaten? Is it exploring man’s relationship with nature? If so, why do I find all the conclusions insufferable? Is it pointing out the complacency we have adopted in our position as apex predators? If so, why are the Sasquatch not more terrifying?

If it had taken the time to really flesh out some of these ideas, and not burden the reader with truly irritating characters, this could have been a excellent novel. As is, I found it wanting.
