Rating: 4/5 – Great theological fiction.
Lent is the second Jo Walton novel that I’ve read and I’m starting to get a feel for her ability write excellent characters in unique situations. Lent (and The Name of the Rose) have convinced that I really enjoy historical fiction that spends a great deal of time pondering theology. Probably I would enjoy any fiction that devotes time to theology, but there’s something charming about examining historical theological discussions with the lens of hindsight and modern biases.
But that’s not all Lent has to offer! It’s also a great mystery story with a delightful twist in the middle of the book that you cannot possibly see coming.
All in all a very enjoyable read.
